STORY

Kwaku Anansi, also known as Anansi the Spider, is a popular Ghanaian folklore about a charismatic spider who frequently found himself weaving his way out of sticky situations.

Woven Worldwide sees Anansi's Web as a contemporary ideology; a visual portrayal of the repatriation of the African peoples returning to Ghana (and other African countries) from all over the world seeking ancestry, identity, and answers after the Transatlantic Slave Trade threatened to destroy their humanity.

When visiting Ghana, Black people have come to the center of the world wide web, the hub, the Meridian, to be 'caught' by the awe of belonging to an ancient culture they have only read about, till now, are at liberty to receive.

Anansi's Web embraces both origin craftsmanship and the highest level of basketry, with Titan-level craftmanship, curvy, tactile and low-slung waves. Our work aims to increase the integrity of our home décor choices as well as and the skilled artisan matriarchs who co-craft them.

Each Anansi's Web is designed and crafted with eternal durability in mind, and produced in small batches. When you engage with this item, you are interacting with 21 days in the life of an artisan, wrapped in functional dignity.

Materials

Our elephant grass is a robust, renewable, tri-tone, tropical-scented straw indigenous to Ghana's Bolgatanga region, gathered and firmly planted by streams of living water. Each reed that is meticulously intertwined into the next depicts one human crossing Ghana and life's loom in quest of true origins and connecting with others through travel, thereby expanding their web of community.

More Information About Woven Worldwide

  • High-quality Craftsmanship

Our team and artisan partners were handpicked for their understanding of materials, process and passion for design. Whether you are browsing our site or visiting one of our stockists, we are always willing to share our deep knowledge and understanding of our craft

  • Unique, Raw Materials

Due to the natural characteristics of elephant grass, each woven basket may have a slight variation in reed colour. When the grass was harvested, woven, and how long it was allowed to dry in the sun determine this. The natural reed gradient ranges from pale green to beige to mustard yellow. This gradient is a beautiful natural feature that should be admired.

  • Women-Led Value Chain

We are dedicated to developing our products in the most environmentally friendly manner possible. We collaborate with Lizzy, a matriarch weaver and farmer who harvests elephant grass from living sources that can be replenished at the same rate as they are depleted.

  • Sustainable Design

Designed for everyday use with functional dignity and durability. We purposefully design our pieces to be timeless. We believe in long-lasting items that are both physically and aesthetically pleasing, and we design products that are as timeless as they are stylish.
